obedience classes

Companion Dog I and Companion Dog II
We offer two basic obedience, or basic good manners classes: Companion Dog I and Companion Dog II.

Companion Dog I will teach the following: sit, down, stay, walk on a loose leash, come (recall), off, etc . Individual problem areas will be covered as needed (barking, jumping, digging, crate and house training, etc.). Games will be used, and there will be an emphasis on fun (both for the dogs and the humans)! Modern, positive training methods will be used (treats, praise, rewards).

Companion Dog II will build on the skills learned in the first class.  There will be longer recalls with distractions, longer stays with additional distractions, more accuracy in heeling, more practice in loose leash walking, more relationship building excercises.  When your dog finishes this class he should be capable of passing the Canine Good Citizen Test.

Instructors:

Maria Oehler has been training and showing dogs for over 25 years.  Along with learning training techniques from some of the top trainers in the country, she has also done research in animal behavior as part of her masters degree in biology.  Maria's dog Macy (see photo at right) has over 15 titles in conformation, obedience, agility and herding.

Maria is a proponent of positive reinforcement. She believes that the best way to train your dog is to make it a positive and fun experience for both you and your dog.

Isis Zometa has taught puppy, adult dog, clicker, and tricks classes to both private individuals and in classroom settings since 2003. She believes in positive reinforcement training with emphasis on leadership skills and responsible ownership. She is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, and was a veterinary technician for twelve years. She has earned a bachelor's degree in business management with minor in psychology. Her home is shared with a loving 9-year American Pitbull Terrier, Chikee who is a Hospice Therapy dog. Also a beautiful 8-month old Presa Canario, Carmello, who is training for the AKC Puppy STARS program. Currently she has co-founded and become Vice-President of the Northeast Florida Bully Lovers of Jacksonville.

To get the deposit to us you can either call us (296-3636) with a credit/debit card number, stop by the office during office hours, or pay using Paypal (our Paypal address is fido@jaxdogs.com ).

You will need to fill out a short information form before the class begins. We strongly prefer that you fill out this form before you come to the park for your first class. You can print off this form by going to the pdf version of the Obedience Class Form.

What to bring to the first class: Do bring your dog to the first class. Your dog should be wearing a flat buckle collar, and you should have with you a regular leash (not a flexi-leash). Also bring with you small, bite-size treats--something your dog really loves!
